Description

Discover a very original traditional sound with the APC BJPT100 mandolin banjo.

The APC BJPT100 combines two instruments in a very special union between the classic mandolin, of classical European origin, and the banjo, of African genesis. The shape is that of the traditional banjo, but the stringing and tuning are those of the mandolin. It has eight strings (four pairs) tuned in Mi-Lá-Ré-Sol.

The bottom and sides of this mandolin banjo are made of koa, a wood widely used in musical instruments for its strength, acoustic characteristics and appearance. The top has the traditional metallic cover of banjos, with a stretched skin, which gives it greater resonance and volume than a wooden mandolin.

The neck is very comfortable, with 20 frets to be able to outline melodies with ease and dexterity, with a head equipped with traditional chimes at the top.

The mandolin banjo is a result of one of the several hybridizations of these instruments, which seek the specific sound of one with the application of techniques from the other.

The banjo is an evolution of instruments brought to America by black slaves in the 17th century. It was adopted by itinerant groups of white musicians in the 19th century, having found a place in North American folk music, especially bluegrass, and was also part of the traditional jazz groups of the early 20th century.

The mandolin appears in its modern form in the romantic period, around 1830, with the introduction of metal strings and pegs, which allowed for a more perfect tuning. It was an instrument of both popular and luxury character, traditionally played both by ladies of European high society and by folk groups, and is now an integral part of academic tunas.

APC was founded in 1976 by António Pinto Carvalho, who descended from a century-old school of luthiers in Porto. The company has about 45 artisans who build several types of traditional Portuguese and other origins. APC is the largest national company in this field, producing and selling instruments to more than twenty countries.

If you are looking for a different sound, the APC BJPT100 mandolin banjo combines the best of two traditions.
