Elixir Strings was born in 1997. Previously, systematic research had been started on coating strings with polytetrafluoroethylene (PFTE). Strings with this coating worked very well as cables, but they sounded poorly like guitar strings. Then came the idea of changing the coating and tinkering with the construction process so that the strings would sound good.
After laboratory study and many prototypes, today Elixir uses various combinations of original POLYWEB® coating and ultra-thin NANOWEB® coating strings for acoustic and electric guitar, bass, mandolin and banjo. Each coating makes a different sound, but they are all variations of the same basic idea: a microscopically thin, advanced polymer tube that wraps around the rope to protect it from corrosion and dirt, without making any contact with the critical area between the windings, where the "critical zone of sound" is found and one is born each perfect note.
