Schumann Album para la Juventude EMC341246
After composing great works of some difficulty for the piano, Robert Schumann wrote easier music for young piano students, at the suggestion of his wife Clara, who told him: "The pieces and lessons with which the children study are very mediocre." From there were born the compositions contained in the book Album for the youth.
The album for youth Opus 68 was composed when Schumann was 38 years old, 8 years before his death.
The pieces combine the pedagogical side and the artistic side and contain that excellent romantic scent, very important for the young students to know the wonderful style of Schumann as soon as possible.
Schumann said of his own pieces; "They are very dear to me and reflect the atmosphere of my childhood family life. I do not remember being so well disposed as when I wrote these plays, I felt like a young student again."
This album for the youth was imitated by other composers of its time, but none of them reached the excellence of Schumann.
These little pieces can be considered as romantic poems, with inventive variety and innovative, reflexive and spontaneous harmonies, with a rich, imaginative personality and full of intimate charm.
Each piece is a small masterpiece in miniature, with perfect quadrature, balance and unity, expressing its essences with a minimum of notes, as good poetry makes with a minimum of words. Some of them have achieved as much fame for Schumann as their greatest works, especially the super known "El Campesino Alegre".
The first edition of the Album was made in 1849 and then between 1880-1887 Clara Schumann worked on a revision with the partial collaboration of Johannes Brahms, correcting errors of the first edition, which is divided into two parts, the first for young and the second for adults . Since then, it has been a very important work for the pianistic pedagogy of young people and adults.
